Faisal I ruled Syria between 1918-1920, first as Emir than as King. After he was toppled by the French Army in 1920, he fled to Europe, where the British re-instated him as King of Iraq, in reward for his loyalty during World War I. Faisal died at a hospital in Switzerland at the age of 48 in September 1933 and was buried in Baghdad. His son King Ghazi I assumed the Iraqi throne until he too died early in 1939.
