Sultan Pasha al-Atrash (1891-1982) was a pioneer nationalist who led an uprising against the French in 1925-1927 and played a political role briefly in the 1950s. The Baath hailed him as a national hero and President Hafez al-Assad looked up to him. The newspaper has a front page photograph of Assad paying his respects next to Atrash's corpse in the Druze Mountain.
