The King-Crane Commission was sent to Syria by US President Woodrow Wilson in the summer of 1919, to see if the people of Syria wanted a French Mandate or not. They curtly refused one, but said that they would accept an American mandate, thanks to the "self-determination" policy of President Wilson, as outlined by his 14-Point Declaration.
