US diplomat Charles Crane meeting with residents of Damascus in 1919

Charles Crane was member of a two-man fact-finding mission, known as the King-Crane Commission, sent by US President Woodrow Wilson in the summer of 1919. Its main objective was to see if the people of Syria wanted a French Mandate or not.
