The coup, which toppled the Baath founders Michel Aflaq and Salah al-Bitar, led to the arrest of President Amin al-Hafez. Salah Jadid did not assume office, calling on the civilian Baathist Nureddine al-Atasi to become president and making his comrade-in-arms Hafez al-Assad Minister of Defense.
