Atrash and Shahbandar had co-led the Great Syrian Revolt of 1925. Atrash was its military strategist, while Shahbandar was its political mastermind. Both of them were sentenced to death by the Mandate regime, forcing Shahbandar to go into exile in Cairo. They returned to Syria after the National Bloc came to power in 1936.
