Among other things, the Council crowned Faisal I as King of Syria, and refused accepting either the Sykes-Picot mandate system for Syria and Lebanon, or the Balfour Declaration for Palestine. For many years, March 8 remained a national holiday in Syria, observed as the official "Independence Day." This was changed when the French evacuated from Syria in April 1946.
